Your Google Business Profile is your most valuable free asset

When someone searches “plumber near me” or “best HVAC in [your city],” Google Maps results appear before organic website listings. That map pack — those three businesses with the pin icons — gets the majority of the clicks. If your Google Business Profile is incomplete, inconsistent, or simply neglected, you’re invisible to customers who are already looking for exactly what you offer.
A strong GBP means accurate categories, a complete service list, regular posts, and photos that show what you actually do. Google rewards profiles that look active and trustworthy — and so do customers.
Consistency and content: the two things Google actually cares aboutLocal SEO comes down to two things working together. First, consistency — your business name, address, and phone number need to match exactly across every directory, listing, and social profile on the web. Even small discrepancies (LLC vs. no LLC, Street vs. St.) create confusion for Google’s algorithm and erode your ranking. Second, content — your website needs to actually say what people are typing into Google. That means local keyword research, not guesswork, and page copy that speaks directly to what your customers search for in your area.
Knowing what’s working (so you’re not just guessing)
One of the most common complaints I hear from business owners who’ve tried local SEO before: “I paid for it but never knew if it was doing anything.” Tracking matters. At minimum, you should know how many people are finding you through Google Search vs. Maps, what search terms are driving those visits, and whether those visits are turning into calls or clicks. Without that data, you’re flying blind.
